WASH IN SCHOOLS

In partnership with Procter & Gamble, H20 for Life, and WASRAG, Freshwater Project International is bringing clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene education to schools in Malawi.

Current school PROJECTS

Khuluvi
Primary School

  • Khuluvi Primary School is located in Zomba District, Malawi. It has 19 classrooms and 14 teachers for a large enrollment of 1,487 students. Students walk to school from as far as 5km distance.

  • Non-functional borehole with damaged pump pedestal. The school needs a new water source as learners have to get water at a distance of 2-3km to the nearest borehole. This compromises a lot of sanitation needs at the school.

  • Current latrines need minor rehabilitation such as replacing doors for privacy and safety. Because of the high enrollment, there is a need to construct additional latrines to meet the toilet to learner ratio.

FUNDS NEEDED: $12,000

St. Paul's
Primary School

  • St. Paul's Primary School in Zomba District, Malawi, has an extremely large enrollment of 2,665 students and only 24 teachers with a sprawling campus of 15 classrooms. Students walk to school from as far as a 7km distance. In the overcrowded classrooms, students sit on the floor as there are no desks to accommodate them.

  • Shallow borehole well that breaks down frequently and dries up during the dry season (April-November), forcing the students to spend class time retrieving water in Nakholo Village about 1.5 km from the school.

  • Most of the latrines at the school are in bad shape and are a health hazard to the learners and teachers. Toilets are in very poor condition, with no doors, and are dirty. They are impossible to empty and should be decommissioned. As with most of the structures at the school, the girls' changing room does not have a door and offers no privacy. There are no hand washing facilities, contributing to high instances of water-related diseases.

FUNDS NEEDED: $17,500

St. Pius
Primary School

  • St. Pius Primary School in Zomba District, Malawi, was established by the Catholic Mission in the village in 1935. The school has an extremely large campus including 7 classroom blocks, 15 classrooms and 30 teachers for a massive enrollment of 2,500 students. As the 15 classrooms are not sufficient for the school attendance size, 6 classes are held outside under nearby trees. Students walk to school from as far as 3km distance.

  • Only water source is a community hand pump a long distance away. Collecting water takes extended class time for the selected students and it is difficult for younger students to collect and carry water from far away, so the burden falls on the oldest students.

  • Very poor and unsanitary sanitation facilities challenge the student’s hygiene and privacy resulting in sickness, lost school time, and early dropout rates among the girls reaching puberty. Additional toilets needed to be built to service the large enrollment of girls at this school. The girls also have two other very poorly built latrines with no doors for privacy.

FUNDS NEEDED: $17,500

Can you imagine getting up early in the morning to fetch water for your family from a dirty stream, then walking miles and miles home with a heavy bucket, and then having to go to a school with no clean water or safe sanitation?

In Malawi, Africa, this is the reality for millions of students.
